Re: Why java is (not) bad for Mindstorms

(...) I agree. I think the barriers are artificial, and really only benefit those who might prefer their alchemy to be abstruse and difficult to master. It allows them to be high priests of the inpenetrable incantation. Mathematics didn't flourish (...) (20 years ago, 23-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: LEGO Day at the Owatonna Arts Center

The Minnesota state FLL tournament is at Benilde St. Margaret (a school in Hopkins) on January 28 from 8 am to 5 pm. For details and directions go to www.hightechkids.org. I'll be a design judge. Visitors are welcome, so stop by the technical (...) (20 years ago, 23-Jan-06, to lugnet.loc.us.mn, lugnet.robotics, lugnet.technic)

Re: Non-purist LEGO Robots: was [The LAST post (hopefully) about Java and the NXT]

I was thinking maybe just a new board that fits in the original brick. Another processor, more memory, a complex connector out the end to connect up non-lego sensors, cameras and other devices needing digital communications interfaces. C. Fred (...) (20 years ago, 23-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: Why java is (not) bad for Mindstorms

(...) One possibility would be to have a compiler that compiles NXT graphical code into ARM code, or NXT executable into ARM code (kind of like a Java just in time compiler). This would bypass the interpreter of the firmware and potentially give you (...) (20 years ago, 23-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: Why java is (not) bad for Mindstorms

(...) Text vs. graphical is one aspect of a language being all things to all people. Another is interpreted vs. compiled code. Steve's Hassenplug required compiled code to get the speed required for balance. Nothing stops there from being both. (...) (20 years ago, 23-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: Why java is (not) bad for Mindstorms

(...) TLG must provide software (firmware) that's "Bullet-Proof" for kids. (most of their users) I prefer a faster version of the firmware, which is why I use BrickOS. These appear mutually exclusive. Is that different from what you're talking (...) (20 years ago, 23-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: LEGO Day at the Owatonna Arts Center

(...) Man you've got a long memory! I think it's been a long time since I've mentioned where I am, and I haven't been too active lately. Getting more active though, even the thought of a new Mindstorms is inspiring me to pull the old one out. So (...) (20 years ago, 23-Jan-06, to lugnet.loc.us.mn, lugnet.robotics, lugnet.technic)

Kev (...) everything (...) Why not? Why couldn't the original RIS language interface have had a button to press which converted your program to a textual form like a conventional language? And this textual language had all the extra goodies that (...) (20 years ago, 23-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: LEGO Day at the Owatonna Arts Center

Kevin, Oooh, bad timing. That's the same day as the Minnesota State FLL tournament. You should come next year and display you MOC's at the tourney. We could have you, me, Doug Carlson and Benton Jackson. I wonder what other AFOL's we have in the (...) (20 years ago, 23-Jan-06, to lugnet.loc.us.mn, lugnet.robotics, lugnet.technic)

  GPS and Bluetooth

Well, a lot of talk I've seen around here about Bluetooth interfacing, GPS and so on. I have found a website that might be of interest for some people with more skils than me. I think these modules will make interfacing NXT with RCX a little easier. (...) (20 years ago, 23-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: Why java is bad for Mindstorms

(...) As of early 2003 (and even going back to 2002) BricxCC had extensive support for compiling and downloading brickOS programs. Exactly when in 2003 I first released my installers for brickOS and cygwin I don't recall but they made using brickOS (...) (20 years ago, 22-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

Hi Kevin, (...) Hm, you got me:) Nqc is fantastic. But the success comes from the fact that you get an easy and elegant to use visual interface and can stand as close as possible to the original, unaltered system. (...) I didn't know it is online.   NXT expansion sets

I was thinking about what TLG would put in NXT expansion packs, and the coolest thing I could think of was an all in one compressor/valve, which could also tell you current air pressure. Sounds doable. After all one of the problems with the RIS is (...) (20 years ago, 22-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: How many people signed up for the NXT Developer's Program?
