I was thinking maybe just a new board that fits in the original brick.
Another processor, more memory, a complex connector out the end to connect
up non-lego sensors, cameras and other devices needing digital
communications interfaces.

Wow, that is well put. On that note, does anyone know
of a good combination of bricks to 'hack' or modify so
that you could encapsulte something like an ARM board
of your choosing in LEGO case, making your choice of
controllers for RIS parts? I'm working on (slowly)
encapsulating mini R/C servos in LEGO bricks, but also
thought of how to do a uC as well. So far, I've got a
rectangle of two studded beams high with flat plates
on top and bottom for an Atmel ARM dev board that I
have. Still have to work out h-bridges and such, and
will rely on I2C-IR interface from Mindsensors.com to
include an RCX as well.
I think that this kind of hacking is the only way to
put huge tons of uC power in a Lego robot.
Does anyone have any ideas along these lines? Its not
purist LEGO, but may be useful for those wanting a
full cray inside the RCX brick? I've even considered
hacking a defunct RCX, but haven't come across one yet
- says alot for TLG) I'm just interested in ideas that
others have had.
