So this past Sunday, I spent a few hours with JohnG sorting out all of the
instructions.  I think we hit about 25-40% of them by physical volume, and we
already had three hundred or so instructions, and only the large full sized ones
at that.  We found everything from the mid 1980's to as recent as 2000.  The
majority are within the last fifteen years.

Some comments:

a)  I really missed out on some themes I used to think were stupid, but were in
fact, quite cool.  Case in point:  Pirates.  I didn't realize how many excellent
pieces the Pirates sets had back in the 90's.  Obviously I've recognized great
pieces over set design in stuff like Harry Potter and Star Wars today, but now I
realize after seeing all the instructions how cool Pirates were.

Another one is Model Team.  Though we thankfully have the large Designer sets
now, the Model Team of the 90's was amazing stuff.  I sure wish I got some of
it.

b)  There were some ugly things back then too.  We often say that Lego today is
quick and dirty, ephemeral releases.  However, a lot of the sets are really
disposable in their design.  And some of it is just ugly:  Ice Planet 2002,
Insectoids, the UFO line...

c) Every set has a hidden secret, a little story that needs discovering.   You only learn it when you build it, and it's not just Technic sets with a cool mechanism.

d) There was something beautifully iconic about Lego in the 80's and 90's,
especially sets with Minifigures.  I'm not sure of it's still around these days,
but poring over these instructions really

Anyways, most of the rtlCore has already received the first list.  Please email
in your requests now.  By week's end, I'll post it for the GTA/SO/Lugnet public
to request.  Then DaveK/JeffVW/JohnG and I will continue with the next batch.

Calum

Wow. Looking through all that stuff was a major flashback. Espically the Technic sets from the mid-90's. It took me back to a time when the most exciting thing in my life was when my parents would take me to "Toys R Us" on a surprise detour at the (...)
