Oshkosh was reputedly a native american of some repute.

Since the colonial period great warriors have received as much attention from
name givers as the more compliant natives. Militants such as Black Hawk,
Tecumseh, Pontiac, Osceola, Red Cloud, and Geronimo are honored in place names
as much as are native statesmen such as Keokuk, Oshkosh, Ouray, and Washakie.

Wisconsin is particularly well endowed with indian or indian derived place
names.
hope that helps.
