A geek?  Moi?

I guess.  Exactly what distinguishes a geek from an "ordinary" nerd? :^)

I've thought of the difference between geeks and nerds to be that geeks
usually are in the computer industry, and often untidy; nerds may work in a
more academic or scientific field and are rather tidy.

A geek *may* have social skills, a nerd does not.
Looking around at clutter on desk...at least I'm not a nerd.  :-)

that are tidy)

Guess I'm a geek, then -- by virtue of the fact that I'm married?  In fact, if
it weren't for the arrival of my son (turned five last week), I wouldn't have
gotten sucked back in to the world of Lego.

You two seem to be split over the issue of tidiness.  Isn't keeping a space
that you can share with another person a social skill?  A nerd's tidiness,
then, would seem to be a social plus.  As long as that tidiness isn't Felix
Unger compulsive, that is.

My engineer friend with the huge junk collection is also married, to a very
patient and understanding woman.  So, I guess that keeps him out of the nerd
category.  Actually, *she* collects books like nobody I know, so perhaps
they're birds of a feather!
