Look out, fans of EarthSea, your world is about to be changed forever...

Some fans of EarthSea would rather creator Ursula K. LeGuin had not
revisited what seemed to her to be an unresolved trilogy. The trickle of new
stories and novels is accelerating however. Those not keeping up through
F&SF magazine can catch up with _Tales from Earthsea_ when it hits
paperback, and a fifth novel is forthcoming.

And most calamitous of all, SciFi channel is producing an EarthSea
miniseries. The upside is that Philippa Boyens ("Lord of the Rings") will
script it. I want to give this lady some credit for having Tolkien's book on
the shooting set constantly--we'll see what happens in the theatre soon.

But it will be a big disappointment if the production turns out to be as
flat and dependent on special effects as SciFi's Dune (which made the older
David Lynch version look good--why else are they rerunning the Lynch
production?)

2001 will go down as a busy year for film versions of classic fantasy works
(hey, HP got to be a classic rapidly.)

(...) Woohoo! Earthsea is one of my favorite series. LeGuin has a rare talent for 'minimalist' descriptions - very capable of drawing out the essence of something in very few words. You know, the sort of skill Robert Jordan could use... <GD&R> James (...) (25 years ago, 7-Mar-00, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)
