That's approximately how I did my Christmas shopping this past year, but it
wasn't anything like a convenience. Among my purchases were a 10 quart glass
punch bowl, an armful of books, a CD player and several CD's. As such, I had
to make about 5 different trips, each involving a half hour of travel each
way, plus walking, while carrying my assorted knicknacks. By comparison, in a
car I could have made one trip entailing a single 45 minutes' drive, and
allowed myself a much wider selection of stores from which to choose, not to
mention the ease of stowing some packages in the trunk while shopping for
others. Here the inconvenience of mass transit comes not simply from the
timing of the schedule (which is still a factor), nor the walk to and from the
stops, stores, and my apartment (which is also still a factor), but instead it
comes from having to carry an unwieldy array of packages on a crowded trolley,
shoulder-to-shoulder with a hundred other, similarly laden holiday shoppers.
