So why should Lego covered with a different yellow, noxious substance

If your assertion is that you would be as distressed if someone blew
cigarette smoke in your face as if someone threw cat urine in your face, then
I can agree with your analogy.  If you find a qualitative difference between
these two, then surely you can see the difference if either substance should
appear on someone's Lego.
Having said that, Caveat Emptor!  Unless there is visible degradation of the
plastic or an indelible smell of smoke (or whatever), then I can't see how
it's worth complaining about; clean and air them!

Well, smoking can leave a very persistant effect. The seller I buy from
who I get the smoke permeated stuff from seems to mostly break down new
sets and sell parts, so they are not exposed to a smoky environment for
very long, so I haven't experienced discoloring or other damage to the
bricks. What I have observed is that it is extremely difficult to clean
the LEGO completely, especially since all the most effective cleaners
use solvents which will damage bricks. Part of the problem is that the
residue is oily (I'm assuming this is the tar). Another problem is that
while ABS is not among the highly permeable plastics, it certainly isn't
as non-permeable as say glass, the result is that it may be impossible
to remove all odor (I can still smell the smoky pieces if I put them
right up to my nose). #2 plastic on the other hand is sufficiently
permeable that the recycled milk jug plastic is molded into new jugs
with a thin layer of new plastic surfacing it, and then only used for
things like bleach because they can not eliminate the sour milk smell,
and it would affect the flavor of any food placed in the containers.

I can also attest that cat piss is a very persistant substance also. The
previous renters in my apartment apparently had a cat who pissed in the
dining alcove corner. If I get down on the floor in that corner, I can
still smell a piss smell after 10 years (and for the first few months
until I got serious with cleaning it was very noticeable). This
situation is actually one of the reasons I don't have a cat. I don't
need a cat deciding that it needs to piss in that corner to mask the
other cat's marking. Of course what I should have done was complained
about the apartment, but I was just happy to get out of the basement
apartment which turned into a river after a heavy rain. I came home one
day after a heavy rain to find 3 INCHES of water in my bathroom.
Fortunately for the current residents of the basement apartments, they
have done some serious work on drainage. The downspouts on the uphill
side of the building now let into 6" flexible hose which is run around
the building, and drains out below the level of the basement floor, but
I think those apartments are still very musty.

(...) Have you worked with one of the enzymatic cleaners that chemically breaks down the pet odors? The one that I have right now, with which I am fairly happy, is called Simple Solution. We got it at a cat show or at one of the big Petsmart stores. (...) (24 years ago, 7-Jun-00, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
