New debate direction alert!!
On the issue of the reporter, I think there is a common confusion (in my
opinion) between freedom of speech and priviledge of access. The reporter has
access to mass media dissimination of his speech that most of us do not.
Everyone has the right to freely express themselves (Except for the yelling
fire in a theater thing) but not everyone has access to the broadcast media. I
can go to any street corner in America a give any speech I want but I can't
walk into CNN headquarters (If I was in Atlanta I would be going to the LEGO
outlet anyways) and expect to be given free airtime. That is not a right.
If the reporter used CNN broadcating facilities to say something that was
contrary to company policy or use other broadcasting facilites identifying
himself as a CNN reporter (That is what happened?), then the employer has the
right to fire the reporter. The reporter can then go back on Iraqi TV as a
former reporter and say whatever or stand on a street corner and shout like the
rest of us.
If you own the piano you pick the tunes. This is the reality of private
ownership of the media, goverment ownership is a whole other barrel of worms.
