How many people have purchased a "used, but 100% complete set" from e-Bay or
Bricklink only to find that it's not true when it arrives 4-6 weeks later
from overseas? I recently purchased an 8460 and an 8839 from a seller in
Germany who claimed that both sets were in their original boxes with
instructions and all pieces were present and accounted for. I even asked the
seller several times to detail the condition of the sets. It didn't matter.
When they arrived they did include the boxes and instructions in decent
condition (bonus!), but both sets were not only missing pieces, they were
filthy with smoke! What was once white was now yellow. To top it off the
8460 did not have a single gear! You would think that the odd 1 X 1 tile
might get missed here or there but every single gear? The flex components
from the 8839 had been broken and "patched" together using pneumatic tubing
and super-glue. It was a joke and by the time I received the sets and put
them together and was able to realize what I actually received the time
limit on posting feedback had passed. Incidentally this seller doesn't have
a single negative feedback on e-Bay. Nice, eh?

I was annoyed, but I pretty much go into a transaction of this sort with
this in mind...no matter what you ask and no matter how many times the
seller will try to reassure you, you are not going to get exactly what you
want unless you buy MISB. Costly? Yes. I guess that's the chance you take
when you buy used sets/parts. Besides when I do get a misrepresented set I
sort of enjoy figuring out what is missing and then searching for it's
replacement on e-Bay/Bricklink. I have bought maybe 2 dozen different sets
from overseas and the only ones that turn out right are the MISB ones. When
you buy used you may be getting a price break from MISB, but you'll pay for
it in quality and replacement parts. It all depends on your own personal
preference.

In order to provide myself with a bit of a vent, I thought I’d post this message and see if others share my perspective/experiences or whether I’m just completely wrong in my attitude and thinking (wouldn’t be the first time). My “problem” is that (...) (23 years ago, 18-Apr-02, to lugnet.market.shopping, lugnet.general) !
