I have found that soaking "smoky" pieces in a diluted Pine-Sol solution
seems to get rid of the smell.  Doesn't take long either - maybe an hour • or
so.

What effect, if any, does it have on the bricks themselves?  What
about overly long soaking, like if you forget and soak them for an
entire day?

I have seen no ill effects but I also have a rather small sample.  I have
done this three time with probably no more than 20-30 bricks at a shot.  The
first time I did it I let them sit in there over night.  The last time I did
I was impatient waiting for a particular piece so I have pulled them out
after an hour.  The smell was gone.  I have a bunch of the pieces sitting in
a plate close to my computer and the smell has not returned.
