Hi all,

I finally got around to going to Legoland (Windsor) for the first time on
Sunday. (Inexcuseable I know as I only live 30min away) The result of a
combination of good weather and remebering that it re-opened this weekend.

I was pleasantly surprised to see how well it was done, and how they have
resisted the temptation to really rip you off for food etc. and ram
merchandise down your throat once you are inside.

Anyone have any idea what that carved 'lightening tree' is supposed to be all
about in the picnic area?

Being a ex-Londoner I was particularly impressed with the London area in
Miniland, I like the way they chuck the passengers on & off the Tube. I know
how it feels. :P I was surprised to note that Miniland was probably the
quietest part of the park, the bottom area around the rides being the busiest.
Hmm, on second thoughts I'm not so surprised, I guess this is symptomatic of
TLG's woes.

I like the little display they had of historical sets, this could have been
much larger for my money - I would like to see a proper museum display.

None of the 'New for 1999' rides were running, the Dragon Jr. ride seemed very
close to completion, the others were promised for May. The boating lake wasn't
operational either. I can't blame them for that though, dispite the fact it
was it was quite sunny, if anybody had fallen in they'd have got hypothermia.

I was disappointed in some ways though, I was hoping to get some extra sensors
for Mindstorms, (They had loads of mindstorms and Cybermaster in stock but no
expansion kits) I had seen a post somewhere that said they were available from
the Dacta stand, not from the shop, but It appears that the Shop sell them now,
(I just got very blank looks at the Dacta stand) but are out of stock "They've
been really popular" said the girl in the shop. ho hum.

There were no 1999 catalogs available either, only one being jealously garded
by the guy on the counter. I had a quick peer at it, but there was nothing that
hasn't been noted elsewhere, all the good Technic is slated for September
release.

They did have the entire SW range though, and very good it looks too. All the
models appear to be of high quality, with nice parts selection. I had to get a
X-Wing, even though my entire post dark-age collection is Technic.

I was quite amused by one Chap who walked into the shop with his 5-ish y.o.
son, and exclaimed: "STARS WARS LEGO! - I don't believe it!" then proceeded to
badger his son to buy one of the smaller sets with his pocket money - and TLG
don't think adult's influence children's purchases. :)

One interesting thing they did have was a new Supercar on 'sneak preview'
display in a case. I had a careful look at it, and I can say it is definitely a
five-speed gearbox + Reverse, and the Hydraulic unit appears to be a single
sealed cylinder that looks like a slightly smaller, transparent version of the
pnematic cylinders. I took a couple of photos, but the display was quite
limiting as to what angles I could get, and the lighting was difficult. I'll
bung them on my website if they come out o.k.

I spotted a couple of obvious AFOL's on Sunday, one guy going round the Log
flume ride (can't remember it's name) on his own, and another videoing the
Mindstorms demo video in the shop. - Anybody we know? ;)

Regards, Dave Ryder.

I know following up your own post is bad form, but I forgot to mention the following. (re the 'dissapointed' section in my prevous post) The shop apparently no longer carries the supplemental parts packs, the only way to get them now is mail order. (...) (26 years ago, 15-Mar-99, to lugnet.loc.uk)
