Well, it’ll be affected by the fact that the 2x2 version has considerably different internal geometry than the 2x4 version, but the 2x4 version has much more sturdy geometry than you’ll find inside either a 2x4 brick or plate. It’s built like a 2x2 brick with 1x2 plates welded on the side, so the four inner studs are gripped roughly the same as with the 2x2 version, but the outer studs are gripped by four points instead of three, and none of them are the more flexible large tubes.

Even if double the studs mean double the grip, the piece adds more height, which gives better leverage for getting the piece off whatever it’s attached to (a 2x4 brick is less secure than a 2x4 plate) and counteracts (at least part of) the extra grip.

True, I was thinking in terms of pull strength rather than shear strength (attach one to a 2x4 brick and see if you can pull them straight apart instead of levering one to the side), but I did notice two days ago during the trial BrickMech game that Peter ran at our MichLUG meeting, that the 2x2 tile version popped loose a few times while the 2x4 version never did. Anyways, much of the perceived additional gripping power of a plate comes from the fact that it’s harder to grab it than a brick, but the 2x2 tile w/pin loses much of that advantage by virtue of the fact that it’s got a pin sticking out of it to provide leverage. In fact, you get more leverage from the pin than from a brick’s wall because it’s in the center rather than on the far side from the pivot point.

Additional to that, with the 2x4 version, you can lock it down much more securely by building over the plated ends.
