They provide a way of connecting modules without having the Technic peg migrate to the wrong side when disconnecting. The two-pronged version provides a way to connect modules in a 2x2 space whilst simultaneously restricting rotation. Sounds fairly useful to me... although I would like to have a 1x1 version as well.

Actually, I like both these parts, because they provide a technic peg (or two) on one side and a smooth surface on the other.

Of course I never would have a use for them in blue, though ;-).
