Do you know why they made that piece? Along with

They provide a way of connecting modules without having the Technic peg migrate to the wrong side when disconnecting. The two-pronged version provides a way to connect modules in a 2x2 space whilst simultaneously restricting rotation. Sounds fairly useful to me... although I would like to have a 1x1 version as well.

It reminds me of how they made

to circumvent the substantial shortcoming of

which someone in loc.au had the ignorance to call juniorized... he/she obviously needed to spend more time building.

Perhaps we need to have a better definition of ‘useful’, one that avoids confusion with ‘useable’ which people often use when defending parts that aren’t useful parts.

I’d say that if a part only had one use, but a) it was a general usage and b) the part was especially helpful at it, I would consider the part to be useful. Hence a brick-with-peg is useful (as the applications I mentioned above are general and it’s very helpful for them) but a micromotor base isn’t (as its use isn’t general despite being quite helpful for orienting your micromotor sideways). It’s harder to think of examples of elements that have a general use but aren’t very helpful at it - I think the 1x6x5 and 6x4 bricks would come close though.

Cheers,

(...) Everyone seems jumpy on Lugnet today... perhaps it's just me. I didn't mean to imply it was useless, just that it wasn't a major buying point of the set. (...) Actually, I like both these parts, because they provide a technic peg (or two) on one side and a smooth surface on the other. Of course I never would have a use for them in blue, though ;-). Cheers Richie Dulin (20 years ago, 15-Jul-04, to lugnet.loc.au, FTX)
