  1. what’s the best and economic way you’ve all found to increase collection

After building for a while, you’ll get a sense of which pieces you need a lot of and which you don’t.

So, my problem is I have a decent quantity (probably in the range of 20-30,000 pieces), plenty of piece variety, but not large quantities of the same pieces. So now, as I raid Bricklink for my upcoming Space take on the Roman Legion (Red cloth capes are a bit overpriced, methinks), I also am trying to gauge the essential bulk elements i need on my obviously limited student budget.

I’d say 20k pieces was a medium-small collection. It wasn’t until I hit 50k+ that I could really start planning large projects without really eating into my parts selection. Now, I’ve got probably more than 100k and I feel safe that I could build whatever came into my creepy mind.

Keep in mind that 20k pieces doesn’t mean you can build a 20k piece MOC - more like a 2k piece MOC, or several MOCs that add up to 2k.

For a Roman Legion Space MOC, I’d recommend starting small, like with fighters or a dropship, before working your way up to larger projects. This will help you learn the basics of building while also giving you a sense of which pieces you use and which you don’t.

Buying at Bricklink, even when pieces are expensive, can be a smart way of buying exactly what you need. Right now I use a lot of pneumatic-T pieces, and altho they are almost $.50 each (for large quantity), it is still cheaper than buying a bazillion Fenris Wolf sets and getting a bunch of parts I don’t want. So, spending $20 (which should be okay in a student’s budget) can result in a high quantity of highly useful parts.

But really, start small in building and allow your collection to jump up before getting into something too big.

(...) That's really good advice. Everybody has a different style, of course, but having large multiples of parts changes what you can do with them. And you may find that your tastes change as you develop- when I started buying on BrickLink, I didn't (...) (18 years ago, 28-Apr-07, to lugnet.general, FTX)
