Can the new flexible technic axles, as seen in ZNAP sets and some
new technic sets, such as 8448, actually be use as axles? From some
pictures in the new S@H andretail catalogs, it seems fairly clear to me
that there are
1. short round axle-diameter disks towards the ends that won't allow
axle-compatible parts to be slid on unless those are really soft, and
2. rod-diameter ends such that there's no usable crossaxle attachment
  even at the end.

Confusion alert.
There are two kinds of technic flexible axles:
A. Flex axle with metal core
Used in ZNAP sets to transmit motor force without gearing. Makes both easy
and bendable connections between motor and application. Both ends have
regular cross axle sections to connect. Small bumps at these sections keeps
you from sliding a wheel or gear all over the axle to the other end. The
metal core is there to make the axle torque-resistant; I suppose it's made
out of two wire windings in complementary directions.
B. All plastic flex axle.
Used in several Technic sets as ornaments. Another attempt to give LEGO sets
smooth looks without using many or large parts. Doesn't seem to be anough
torque-resistant to use for driving axle.
