Speaking of 8445, what is between the steering knuckles and the
front wheel hubs?

Not sure I totally understand the question, not being a technic head.

However the front wheels pivot on two balls that stick out from the
frame. The balls are on the end of those 1x2 plate with triangular
a-frame parts. The pivoting part seats on these two balls and looks like
the top of a sub bun with a hole in it wich takes the dark grey axle
with end stud. This sub bun has a ball of its own which takes a flex
system thingie to carry steering motion.

The dark grey axle with end stud goes through one of those flat disks
with technic axle hole ( 3x3 I think) which gets stickers that look like
disc brake rotors. It then goes into the wheel hub.

In a lot of ways the steering setup is similar if not identical to

but that's too new for you to go look at the instructions.

I defer to someone else to provide an older model with kl scans that
uses that steering setup.

(...) The 8440 has the same suspension setup on both front and rear axles. The instructions are at: (URL) at Kevin Loch's Net Server. Pic 16 shows the front partially assembled and the sub bun on the rear. The 8437 has this setup on the front only. (...) (25 years ago, 7-Jul-99, to lugnet.general)
