I think there are too many news groups on LUGNET!

I don't have time to follow them all (and I don't *want* to follow them all),
but there is one thing that really bugs me: I *hate* to see the 'follow-ups
set to <any group I do not usually read>', when I'm beginning to get
interested in a thread.

In general, a thread only jumps groups when it wanders into an area very
far from the subject of the original group. This is a good thing. I know
it may be frustrating to read, but most of the discussions I have
followed into other groups have been into the off-topic groups, or the
admin groups (and an occaisional forray into lugnet.market.theory).
These forrays into the off-topic group represent discussion which would
be totally out of line in RTL.

While in some ways I agree with the too many groups complaint, I also
like the small groups. I read a lot during work while waiting for
things. If I have a busy day, I can easily scan the groups which are
most important to me.

A lot of people may not have the option of using a fancy news reader
which can filter stuff out. Also, an automated categorizer will far more
often fail than someone posting to the wrong group (and usually posts to
the wrong group are announcement/sale type things, not gee you posted
your neato train in Star Wars so I missed it (though that did happen
recently...)).
