It may just be the way I see the organisation of this site, but to me it seems
that .general, being the main group of lurkers [I believe] should just be for
the initial announcement, with the other groups used for the threads, allowing
new users to look through this group more easily, and giving them a more
welcoming site. At present, it looks dis-organised, and uninviting...Have a
look. If you're using the web browser, go to .general, and then look at the
next 20 messages. At present, lots of posts about studio [town presumably],
but not much else, and certainly not likely to make a new user want to keep
looking.

That sounds like the definition for lugnet.announce (which does indeed force
you to set followups). My impression is that lugnet.general is for discussions
which don't have a better newsgroup (or set of newsgroups) to be discussed in.
I think Todd does watch for topics which start to become strong enough to have
their own newsgroup, at least to some extent (I'd almost like to see a
"history of LEGO" newsgroup at this point, and there are probably half a
dozen or more other areas which could benefit from their own newsgroup).

Actually, one thing I suggested last year might be good to put in place real
soon would be a lugnet.new.2001 or somesuch for all the discussion of the 2001
sets when they are first available to be seen in a catalog, and later when
they actually come out (which tends to swamp .general for several weeks). I
feel that such a set of newsgroups would significantly reduce clutter in
.general, and make an easy place for someone who shows up late in a year to
find out what everyone thinks of the sets currently on the shelves, or to
ignore such if they desire (it might be nice for example to be able to exclude
that discussion from news searches).

(...) That wasn't what my main complaint was about...What I didn't like was that it was posted to .general ONLY, with no reference to .loc.us [where it would have been more appropriate for the following discussion for a US only competition.] I have (...)
