Ben I have a train related question that is more "wheel" related.  What is • the
difference between the old small black spoked wheels that come out of the • black 2x4
brick housing, and those that cannot be removed (5070 Service pack).  I • have some
of each, and I was wondering what would happen if I tried to force the • (5070 type)
wheels out of the housing.  Would I break them.  The reason I ask, is that • I am
building some 396 Thatcher Perkins models from spare parts (it has one • small black
spoked wheel in the front of the engine), and I was wondering how to • remove the
black spoked wheels from the 2x4 bricks, when they will not come out. • Will I
destroy them if I try to force them out?

I'm not Ben, but I'll give it a try anyway ;-)
The main difference is that the old spoked wheel has its' axle attached to
the wheel (axle revolves with the wheel), while the 5070 wheelset the axle
is fixed to the 2x4 brick and the 'stud' on the end keeps the wheels
attached (wheel revolves around axle). So if you try to remove the wheels
from the 5070 you would have to break the axle and this destroys the
wheelset (it's nearly impossible to get the wheels back on).
IIRC the Perkins locomotive has quite some space in the boiler to keep a
trainwheel hidden. Isn't it possible to put a complete 5070 wheelset with
the wheel to the front in there and fill the gaps on both sides with 1x1x1
black bricks? On a finished model this might look similar from the outside I
guess?

(...) That's nearly right, but I have found a good way to take things apart without destroying them: Use an old fork (it might bend a little) and put it with some force behind the wheel. Do it that way, that the plastic pin is lying in the gab (...) (24 years ago, 19-Sep-00, to lugnet.general)
