Wrong! Most of my best Technic creations were built when I had only the red motor, blue pneumatic and yellow flex sets! Now that I have 20 times that many bricks and pieces, it is soooo much harder for me to build anything decent! Too many bricks at times.

And look at Richard Wright's students' creations from Lego Ancient theme contest....All of the models are good, and some of the best use the smallest number of bricks!

S'cuze me, but try reading what I really said, rather than what you have
read into it.  I did NOT say that a good model has to have a lot of
bricks; in fact, my favorite self-designed model is a spiral staircase,
consisting of 2x6 plates, 1x2 plates, and 1x1 rounded plates. Only three
different pieces in the whole thing, and I think it has a very
impressive elegance of design.

But to do it in nice looking colors (barring the availability of ALL
needed pieces in a polybag) is fairly expensive, requiring 30 or so 2x6
plates, etc.

And I am NOT saying that a good model cannot be built with an
inexpensive set, either. I think some VERY good models could come out of
that silver Freestyle bucket, for example. In fact, I'd really LIKE to
see what people could do with a limited subset.

The problem in competition, as I see it, is that someone with good
creativity and $1000 worth of bricks can do a far superior job than
someone with equal creativity and $50 worth of bricks.  It is for that
reason that I think at least SOME of the rounds should be on a limited
subset of bricks, rather than just whatever the entrant happens to have
in their collection. That way, a newbie would have something of an equal
footing with one of the old hands, at least as far as options for which
bricks to use, and how many of each.

I am also NOT saying that I think an "unlimited" category is inherently
"unfair." I just think that what might be produced on a shoestring would
be very different from what coulds be produced out of a 10 year
collection. If that makes me "wrong!" (as you say), then so be it.
