(grins) It stems from our use of the term JumpGates. I honestly do not recall
which of the participants first provided that particular term here in Starship,
although surely it has been used in other Sci Fi before. But early during game
development, Richard Parsons offered quite a detailed description of how they
work:

I too have enjoyed a few campaigns in the old tabletop game, Traveller. :)
Just last year I was involved as a player in the D20 version (but alas I had a
falling out with the GM). JumpShips are in fact one of many parallels I have
seen between Traveller and Starship. Another case: We have a lot of terran
homeworlds that seem unrelated. One theory on how this can be is that there may
have been a true earth from where ancestral travellers originated, a place now
all but forgotten. Traveller used a similar backstory.
One thing that makes Starship a little different (other than the obvious fact
that players must build with ABS), is that each sector is a separate game run by
a different mediator. The galaxy is just a means of connecting all the games
together.
Anyhoo, if you are considering joining, we would love to have you aboard! Hope
to see some ships from you!
