That set has been, IMHO, (next to the 8431 Crane Truck re-issue) the best
"really big" technic set in recent years (mindstorms doesnt count as technic)

Others may not agree, since S@H has had to put it on 50% clearance twice to clear
out inventory.

I too think it is a great parts set, except...

The 8466 has so many good attributes:
1.a fair few studded beams, including the (exclusive to that set) l-shaped
studded beam (its like 2 1x4 beams joined at right angles)
2.good specialist parts (like the 4x4 suspension parts for example)
3.a really cool color (LEGO, please make more parts in Metalic Green)

You're the first person I've seen that likes the pea soup puke green.  There's a
reason why those panels don't sell well on Bricklink.  The color is hideous.  It
was hideous when it started showing on real cars in the 70s, and it's still
hideous today (yet OEMs still occasionally sell a car in that nastly shade).

I would bet that if they had used silver or dark silver in place of the puke
green, the set would have sold better.  I know *I* have more puke green panels
than I know what to do with, so the spray paint is probably going to have to come
out to make them at all useful to me.

The only thing that would make those parts useful to me would be a Lego
recycling machine set on beam. (Is it possible to recycle worn Lego?)

I think people would much sooner have the 8880 which had a much superior 4x4
mechanism and could be re-released as a classic, but you'd need a poll on
the official Lego site to confirm this.

The only reason I didn't buy the 8431 was the colour (yellow), the
relatively few interesting parts, and the price compared to second hand, but
these factors won't stop me buying the new JCB as 10 pnuematic cylinders
will make it worthwhile.

I've just had another idea (...) The next time their is a poll to choose which set should be re-released why not have an advocate for each potential set. Each advocate could be drawn from the Afol community and state their case for why their chosen (...) (22 years ago, 30-Apr-03, to lugnet.technic, lugnet.dear-lego)

(...) <snip> (...) I'd rather have the 8466 over the 8880, even with the green panels--the 8880 is pretty neat, but overly complicated and doesn't have near the suspension 'out of the box' that the 8466 does. I find that if you want a car, the 8448 (...) (22 years ago, 30-Apr-03, to lugnet.technic, lugnet.dear-lego)
