great discussion topic. what we generally call a catapult is actually an
onager, an effective anti troop area of effect weapon, as they often fired
numerous small stones. normally, they were not used to attack walls.
instead, the attackers would build seige towers or used capped battering
rams to bring down the walls.

a very good definition, however, if i may add, the way in which a trebuchet
lobs its missiles is also the defining charactaristic. typically, catapults
(onagers) ballistas, and other seige weapons attack the face of the
building, or, the front. they lob or shoot objects in a low arch forward,
also making them effective anti troop weapons. however, the trebuchet lobs
it's missile in a very high arch, which allows it to shoot very far, and
come down on top of buildings, where they are not as strong. this is what
makes the so devastating. the trebuchets that we see pictures of are
actually highly complicated machines, and it takes a mathematition to figure
out how to aim them, but they are extremely accurate, more so than any other
missile type seige weapon.
