Its easy to combine unofficial files and official into one repository if
they arrive separated. Quite a bit more difficult to go the other way round.

Absolutely. Before I started using LDView and realized that Bricksmith could
also use its Unofficial folder, any and all unofficial files I downloaded just
got dumped in parts. To chime in on the filename length issue, my LDraw folder
got real ugly because initially I didnt realize that p and s stood for
primitives and subparts (as a casual end user, youre not really exposed to
that terminology). Consequentially, over time I accumulated many misplaced and
duplicate parts. It would have been trivial to avoid that problem if a few more
letters could have been spared for descriptive names. Thats water under the
bridge, though, since it proved such a hassle to organize recently that I just
threw out the whole thing and let LDView download and organize a new LDraw
directory. Worked like a charm.
Also, having all the unofficial parts in a separate directory makes it easy to
check if your models rely on any unofficial parts. If you temporarily rename the
unofficial directory, Bricksmith (and presumably other programs) will identify
which parts cant be found (the unofficial ones).
