The actual motors (both 12V and 4.5V) were sold seperately as replacement packs, so users can screw open the case and replace the motor (either replacing a broken motor or replace a 4.5V motor with a 12V motor or vice versa). As Niels indicated, the 4 x 12 x 3 1/3 versions are openable with a screwdriver, allowing the actual motors to be replaced, so I think the term "Shortcut" is correct.
