Gar, guh, gah, guh.... D'oh! Did I _mention_ that conjecture wasn't
allowed?
I KNEW this'd happen... <sigh> <bg>
-----
1990:
----
8850: I bought mine used [and was ripped off by the buyer on this one,
thank you VERY MUCH TERRY for bringing up THAT painful memory. :-P], so
I can't be sure the elements are "stock." (They're rectangular, even
though it shouldn't matter for total scientific accuracy).
1991:
----
8815: Rectangular
8840: Rectangular
1992:
----
8838: "T" Shape, (both copies, one still with polybags intact)
[Uh-oh! I KNEW I'd find a way to make you PAY Terry! :)]
1993:
----
8828: Rectangular
8836: "T" Shape
The "T" on the 8838's was quite pronounced. The "T" on 8836 looks like
a mistaken "ding" in the plastic, it's so subtle. The others don't look
"dinged" at all.
All sets are original, still in boxes (all opened, some built, but they
all got back into the original boxes -- no I don't intend to keep them
that way forever) -- except for 8850 [grrr -- it _burns_ :-P]
-----
I don't have anything modern sitting around that's guaranteed to have
one, so I haven't even SEEN the circular that you talk about.
I'd say that rectangular is fairly certainly the original form. Then
"T", then probably circular.
In the end, they fit the "model"; that TLG is, over time, snipping off
little bits of plastic everywhere it (they) can, to save on cost. That
would support rect->T->circ.

Postscript: All kidding aside, I'm actually glad I had a reason to pull
these out; it was suh-weet to walk down memory lane like that again. To
see all those early 90's sets all laid out... <sigh> And the reminder
that I had the extra 8838 (gift for a non-LEGO friend who subsequently
returned it to me) still factory fresh (seal was broken and it's NOT for
sale) was a nice "oh, yeah!" too. It reminds me why I never toss the
boxes...

| (...) I'm not sure if I agree with that. Looking at the 8251, a 1999 set, it looks like it has a rectangular slot: (URL) then again, I haven't got the 8251, so it may very well be that the parts included have the circular hole. I dunno. Fredrik (25 years ago, 31-May-99, to lugnet.cad.dev)
