Yes, there are two variants of this piece, one with a rectangular slot,
and one with a circular.  To me, the circular one seems to be more
frequent, but it may just be here in Europe.  I dunno.

There are two types?  That means both most likely use the same number.  Which
means that at some point, someone will make the other version.  Which means
that the current version should have an alpha designator appended *now* so we
don't have to ~Move it in the future.

The question I have is:  Which is the original (oldest) version?  That would be
the 2853a.dat version.

My TECHNIC is currently packed away and inaccessible.  I'll need the
group's help for this.

Here are the first couple years' use of this element.  If you (anyone,
anyone?) have one of these sets, and you're reasonably sure it's safely
been kept unintegrated, please take a look and see which type is in your
copy of any of these sets, and post:

Qty Color Set  U.S. Set Name             Year       Theme
--- ----- ---- ------------------------- ---------- --------------
2   Grey  8850 Rally Off-Roader          1990       Model
1   Grey  8815 Speedway Bandit           1991       Model
2   Grey  8840 Rally Shock N' Roll Racer 1991       Model
4   Grey  8838 Shock Cycle               1992       Model
2   Grey  8828 Power Loader              1993       Model
2   Grey  8836 Sky Ranger                1993       Model
6   Grey  8868 Air-Tech Claw Rig         1993       Model

My guess is rectangular, but I don't have much evidence to back that up
with.

I don't have _any_ of these older sets.  :-/
But, in checking the samples of 2853 I have (20+ free/not in models), all but
one have the rectangular slot.

I *might* have surmised from that that the rectangular slot variant is likely
the newer type.  BUT....
In looking at the "Mag Wheel Master" motorcycle, I see that both of the 2853's
in the engine are of the circle-hole variety.

So:  Circle=new  Rectangle=old.
So the piece in the current vote is of the new type - 2853b.dat

(...) I'm not sure if I agree with that. Looking at the 8251, a 1999 set, it looks like it has a rectangular slot: (URL) then again, I haven't got the 8251, so it may very well be that the parts included have the circular hole. I dunno. Fredrik (25 years ago, 31-May-99, to lugnet.cad.dev)
