I can tell you how I've done patterns, such as the 2582p68.

I always create the pattern in 2-D, even if I eventually will rotate it onto a
sloped surface (though obviously this wouldn't work for rounded patterns).

I lay out the pattern on a large sheet of paper, and take measurements to
determine all the coordinates of the vertices.  Then I divide it into the
fewest possible discs, ndiscs, quads, and triangles, and enter the data.

An important thing to remeber about Ldraw (and I think LDLite, too) is that at
smaller magnification, areas drawn first tend to "bleed" and use up pixels
before areas drawn later.  So if for example I had a pattern of thin black and
red stripes, if I draw all the black stripes first, then the red stripes, at
smaller magnification the pattern turns out all black.  I usually solve this
by first drawing a type 2 line for the red stripes, then drawing the quads for
the black stripes, and finally drawing the quads for the red stripes.

Once you have the actual pattern complete, you add it as a subfile to the
part, delete the face of the part you're replacing, and "fill in" the area
around the pattern with quads.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

Not any formal document. (1)
But I do have one _very_ important suggestion:
Do NOT use BMP2DAT for transforming bitmaps to ldraw code.

I used the BMP to Dat converter that is in Steve's LDraw Add-on.  Is that
acceptable?  If not, do you have any suggestions on what I should use? • Should
I *not* be making the patterns as bitmaps (i.e. use internal shapes instead)?

It was a nifty little tool when first introduced, but it does not produce
acceptable patterns for inclusion in an official update.
The quality level is just too poor.  And besides, to do most patterns
correctly, the "face" of the part in question should be removed first.  Then
the pattern is inserted in its place, and then blank areas left over are
filled.
Simply trying to "stick" the pattern on the surface usually does not work to
well.

That's why you haven't seen any parts from me yet.  ;)  I noticed the • floating
effect, which is one of the reasons I posted.  I've been trying (and • dreading!)
to use rectangles to fill in the faces.

Thanks!
Jeff
