It's the same thing. Actually, it's worse -- rect.dat has edge-lines. So it
can't be used in place of a quad.
Generally, avoiding t-junctions is harder when working with primitives - you
have to know where the outside vertices are on the primitive, so you can use
those same vertices to make a clean mesh.
