Remember, we're the cream of the crop.  LDraw.org gets 30,000
main page hits a week, and a lot of those visits are kids and
families who get overwhelmed with the complexity of it all.

I think that a big problem is that stuff is still very scattered, even
if there are links to all the different parts.  I think one thing that
would really help people to get set up would be an InstallShield (or
whatever) setup.  Download one file.  Check the boxes for the utilities
you want to install.  Click OK, wait a bit, and you're done.  The
installer would set up the LDRAWDIR and LGEODIR environment variables
(if necessary), all the directories, unpack all the DAT parts, and
create a Start Menu program group, etc.  The installer could be designed
to download the checked components on the fly instead of all at once.[1]
Like many windows programs, choosing from "Typical", "Complete", and
"Custom" would be very helpful.
...However, I don't know how to write an installer, but I'm sure someone
does.  I'm just throwing this out there...
Unification of all the different LCAD utilities to some degree would
be quite helpful for both new and old users, IMO.  Perhaps it's time to
take another look at Karim's Artemis outline:

1) This would also make it easier to make sure you got all the latest
LDRAW and LGEO parts... Eventually, programs (MLCAD?) could also
automagically check for updates.
