This last one of yours is one of my problems too. But, on the other hand,
its not something that I will allow to thwart my goals of community building
with LDraw. I'm happy with Jake's enthusiasm for more information, and I
hope it inspires people to contribute. I'd like to see LDraw.org as a place
where people can go and expect new information and exciting things, and to
be able to learn how to do what they've seen others do without having to do
it themselves.
Remember, we're the cream of the crop. LDraw.org gets 30,000 main page hits
a week, and a lot of those visits are kids and families who get overwhelmed
with the complexity of it all. Its useful to have tutorials as a tool to
guide people step by step, and its useful to have them in a central location.
Community building and maintenance (to facilitate new information posted
more readily) is my focus on the LDraw.org site rebuild currently in the
works. Also, community building out in the real world is a focus as I work
to prepare curriculum for BricksWest 2002 and then refine that curriculum to
be made publicly available for use at any LEGO event.

Manuals may not be absolutely necessary to learn how to use something, but
it sure cuts out a lot of time, sweat, and tears when someone is trying to
learn. Manuals, tutorials, help people get on their feet with something and
learn how to use it. They give knowledge so the person can explore deeper
on their own. And having reference material available also helps the volume
of repeat questions we get on these forums and through the website.

Or FAQs and tutorials on LDraw.org. That's the reason for the site's
existance - to allow people one place where they can find the info they need
instead of having to look around for stuff. The reason the site was founded
was stuff was scattered originally. Its not that we've arrived now, the
site's far from achieving its original goal, but I, along with a few others
dedicated to the community, are working on ways for the site to become that.
To build a community of knowledgeable users and promote LDraw as a free, fun
tool to enhance the LEGO hobby for anyone willing to give it a shot.

Its fun, but it can be more fun if we work together to build a community. :-)
Thanks for taking the time to write out your thoughts.

| (...) I think that a big problem is that stuff is still very scattered, even if there are links to all the different parts. I think one thing that would really help people to get set up would be an InstallShield (or whatever) setup. Download one (...) (23 years ago, 9-Nov-01, to lugnet.cad)
