Am I the only one who feels this odd compulsion?  Sometimes I'll tear
it apart very soon after building it, but it just doesn't feel right
to not build the set that Lego designed.  It's kind of like paying
tribute or something...

That's EXACTLY what I used to do-- up until a few months ago. Even when • Ames
had that 75% off all SW sets and I bought 6 X-wings (and a bunch of other
stuff), I built ALL of 'em. But several months ago, I broke down and said
'forget it'. I'll still build a new set the first time I get it, and
occasionally even leave it up-- but so often nowadays I'm buying sets for
specific pieces, so I already have a use for them. So every second I spend
building the 'intended' model is another second that I'm not building what • I
really WANTED to build. So I give in and DON'T build it... the end of an
era, I spose....

Ditto.  The first copy of a set always gets built just to see how it goes
together.  Multiple sets only get built if there is a reason (several
X-Wings and Snowspeeders are currently assembled as a small fleet).
Otherwise, multiples are strictly for parts.

Also, for me, an original rarely stays together.  Currently, I have a few
Pirate/Armada sets together, some Star Wars, and the McDonald's promo set.
That's it.  Everything else is fodder.
