To All,

Ever since my little-kid days I have always felt a need
to build the
set using the instructions at least once, even if it's a
really dumb
one that I just bought for the parts.  But lately I've
started buying
more than one of some sets, and am finding that to be
kind of silly,
though I haven't yet stopped doing it.  When I'd buy a
pair of sets
(which I did at the recent Kmart BOGO50% sale), I'd sit
down with my
wife next to me and we'd each build one of them.  That
was kind of
fun, since it's usually hard to share Lego with someone.

Am I the only one who feels this odd compulsion?
Sometimes I'll tear
it apart very soon after building it, but it just
doesn't feel right
to not build the set that Lego designed.  It's kind of
like paying
tribute or something...

Interesting question. I used to build every set I got, for
awhile, I think all I got sets for was to build, and that
went on through most of my LEGO collecting years, let's say
from when I was 4 till at least 16 or 17. When I went to
Ohio State, I did buy some sets for parts, most notably the
715(?) Paradisa window / BASIC building set, among others,
when they were on clearance. I have bought numerous sets
that I ended up scraping for parts.

Whne I went back to Michigan, and went to college another 4
years, I bought a lot of sets, did not do a lot of building.
This lasted from when I was 19-24 years old. I built most of
the sets, escept Town Junior, I have had a habit of getting
mad at them, and tearing them up before finishing.

Now that I am entering a new LEGO phase for myself, I might
have time to build again, I rarel build for the sets
anymore, simply because it is time consuming, and I don't
like any of the models. I did build the big red TECHNIC car
8448, but most sets now are just for parts, and I don't want
to waste time anymore.

If they get better sets again, I might build them. For now,
I am looking forward to building custom MOC's using my old
LEGO creations.

(...) I used to build every set at least once, no matter how cheesy or ridiculous. I broke that compulsion, though, when I purchased all of the Roboriders at a nice clearance. Once I built the first two, I realized they're all pretty much identical, (...) (24 years ago, 29-Mar-01, to lugnet.build)
