Hmmm, I must confess to the opposite problem - I very rarely build the sets at
all, and purchase them for the pieces.  The only exceptions from the past 5 years
or so have been the first year Star Wars sets and the Life On Mars mechs.  The
Star Wars sets I originally put together, but they were modified shortly after
that.  The Life On Mars mechs I built only to get a good feel of how TLG was
putting them together and using the new pieces - but the next days they were
already cannabalized.  In fact, I don't think I have a single LEGO set intact as
the actual intended design.

Ever since my little-kid days I have always felt a need to build the
set using the instructions at least once, even if it's a really dumb
one that I just bought for the parts.  But lately I've started buying
more than one of some sets, and am finding that to be kind of silly,
though I haven't yet stopped doing it.  When I'd buy a pair of sets
(which I did at the recent Kmart BOGO50% sale), I'd sit down with my
wife next to me and we'd each build one of them.  That was kind of
fun, since it's usually hard to share Lego with someone.

Am I the only one who feels this odd compulsion?  Sometimes I'll tear
it apart very soon after building it, but it just doesn't feel right
to not build the set that Lego designed.  It's kind of like paying
tribute or something...
