Only recently I bought my first set for parts only (the Sith-thingy in a
garage sale). I did build the thing (I think I was watching F1 in Malaysia
at the time) but it only lasted a day....
All I buy really is technic and Model Team, and they're usually worth
building at least once, to see the tricks they've used. Somehow I can't get
myself to buy an ugly or uninteresting set just for parts....
Last year I moved country and the movers messed up, causing the loss of
dozens of parts. I built all models (I only bought 10 or so in the time I
lived in Ireland) to find out what was missing. I got in the spirit of
things, and went on to get all my old Lego from my parents' attic and built
every set I still had the instructions for ('only' about 100). Great
experience. Highly recommended if you have the space and time.....
Just uploaded the pics. Lousy quality, but just to give you an idea....

Ever since my little-kid days I have always felt a need to build the
set using the instructions at least once, even if it's a really dumb
one that I just bought for the parts.  But lately I've started buying
more than one of some sets, and am finding that to be kind of silly,
though I haven't yet stopped doing it.  When I'd buy a pair of sets
(which I did at the recent Kmart BOGO50% sale), I'd sit down with my
wife next to me and we'd each build one of them.  That was kind of
fun, since it's usually hard to share Lego with someone.

Am I the only one who feels this odd compulsion?  Sometimes I'll tear
it apart very soon after building it, but it just doesn't feel right
to not build the set that Lego designed.  It's kind of like paying
tribute or something...
