Ever since my little-kid days I have always felt a need to build the
set using the instructions at least once, even if it's a really dumb
one that I just bought for the parts.  But lately I've started buying
more than one of some sets, and am finding that to be kind of silly,
though I haven't yet stopped doing it.  When I'd buy a pair of sets
(which I did at the recent Kmart BOGO50% sale), I'd sit down with my
wife next to me and we'd each build one of them.  That was kind of
fun, since it's usually hard to share Lego with someone. • [...]
I used to build every set at least once, no matter how cheesy or ridiculous.
I broke that compulsion, though, when I purchased all of the Roboriders at a
nice clearance.  Once I built the first two, I realized they're all pretty
much identical, and didn't bother with the rest.  I also did that with the
last Throwbot I bought on clearance (Flare) because it didn't look like
anything new.  Those are the only exceptions to my rule, however.  I agree,
it is sort of like paying tribute :)

It has been helpful in a few situations, where there was a cheesy set
that I didn't care much to see built - but it turned out that this
cheesy set included some cool new construction technique which I was
able to add to my repertoire.

Unfortunately, I can't think of any good examples at this time.  But
it can be helpful for that reason, nonetheless.
