I have one slight concern about these molded plastic tackle boxes, • which is
whenever I open one after about a week of being closed, there is a • strong
smell of solvent coming from inside. Presumably this is some sort of • solvent
used to mold the box, which leaks out of the plastic over a very long • period
of time. I have a slight worry that the solvent may be of a type that • would
attack the Lego's ABS, but so far I haven't seen any evidence of this. • I
think that people should keep an eye of the surface appearance of their
stored pieces though, especially transparent pieces where I would • expect any
change to be the most apparent.

I was a bit concerned too, and although there has been no short
term damage, I don't know about the long term.

I notice the same smell coming not from my Plano boxes, but from large
quantities of basic bricks stored in LEGO buckets or tubs.  I thought it
was the LEGO itself.

I think that the smell is just normal soft plastic outgassing. The plano
boxes are made of a fairly soft plastic, so I don't think it's styrene
or PVC.

Does anybody manufacture with PVC anymore?  I know that hard lessons were
learned by coin and sports card collectors when their album pages were made
from PVC.  But I thought that there were newer plastics that had eliminated
the need for PVC.  Not sure, just putting the idea out.

Regards,
Allan
