cool, you are going to eventually be sorting exactly the way I do :)
my mind control device must be working, slowly but surely....
I sort each color into the following bins by form:
boring rectangular bricks- 1 large bin each
plates- 1 small bin each (except black and grey which use large bins)
technic parts- 1 small bin each (except black and grey which use large bins)
unique shapes- 1 large bin each (except black and grey which had to be moved
into terribly titanic 18"x12"x36" "under the bed" bins)
hinged and moving parts- they get put in a ziplock bag and tossed into the
unique shape bins.
then the rest of these categories get their own bins (color doesn't matter):
generic minifig parts
historical minifig parts
future/fantasy minifig parts
wheels and dedicated axels
clear parts
window parts and doors
odd colors like orange, pink, and teal that haven't graduated to full sorting
yet (half goofy throwbot parts right now)
printed parts
animals and creatures
folliage and trees
minifig tools and things like backpacks, weapons, and wood chests
miscellaneuos things like magnets, motors, lights, and etc...
ummm, I think that's it...
Originally I started out just sorting by color, but that outgrew my bins.
all together it took a lot of sorting, but that was over 3 years
ago, and I've had no problem keeping it organized since then. I honestly think
I have cut my building time in half. Of course some of that time is lost when
I have to re-assimilate them back into the bins, but sorting is easy to do
while watching tv or listening to music. oddly enough I think I am getting
faster at it as time goes on too.
cheers!
