I use both methods, shameless mixing and matching. :)
My more specialized pieces are sorted function-first. I find it much easier
when looking for a red 1x4 arch to search through a (relatively) small drawer
of arches, than to sea the proverbial sea of red.
But for basic building stuff - i.e. bricks & plates (and slopes, if I had
enough to justify it), I sort color first, then form, if I need to. As an
example, I have the proverbial sea of red - nothing seperated, just a big tub
o' red bricks - while my small grey plates are completely sorted into small
compartments. because I frequently need a specific bit, or want to know before
starting on something if I have enough grey 1x1 round plates.
