Open the pod bay doors, HAL.

Introducing the (URL) I>... (URL) Being one of my favourite vessels in science fiction, I've wanted to build a LEGO version of this ship for a long time. And as it turns out I actually HAVE been building it for a long time. :) I think I started this (...) (20 years ago, 26-Mar-04, to lugnet.announce.moc, lugnet.space, FTX) !!

Fantastic. Any chances of some close ups of detail? Mike (20 years ago, 26-Mar-04, to lugnet.space, FTX)

Re: Open the pod bay doors, HAL.

Beautiful! Even though it's sub-minifig scale, it's an awesome creation. I like how it's suspended on the black stands, which is absolutely essential for such a fragile ship (only intended to be operated outside of a gravity well). (20 years ago, 26-Mar-04, to lugnet.space, FTX)

Re: Open the pod bay doors, HAL.

I saw this at your site earlier today - very nice. Discovery has long been one of my favorite Sci-Fi ships, too. It's good to see such a faithful LEGO replica. (...) You're free to display it at my house! :-) James Wilson Dallas, TX (20 years ago, 26-Mar-04, to lugnet.space, FTX)

Re: Open the pod bay doors, HAL.

(...) I'll say! Man, oh man that's cool. I happened to watch 2001 for the zillionth time just last weekend, and I lamented for the zillionth time that I don't have the wherewithal to build a good-scale Discovery. Here are my two demands: 1. Post (...) (20 years ago, 26-Mar-04, to lugnet.space, FTX)

Re: Open the pod bay doors, HAL.

(...) OK, now that I think about it, I don't think the ship in 2001 carried the Roman numeral I. I may be mistaken, but hey, it's the only flaw I can find to pick at... Like I said before, this thing is GREAT (ok, I didn't say that before). James (...) (20 years ago, 26-Mar-04, to lugnet.space, FTX)

Re: Open the pod bay doors, HAL.

(...) Yeah, to be honest I'm not really sure why I added the I. Various references call it the Discovery, Discovery One or Discovery I. Throughout the novel 2001 it's simply referred to as the Discovery and the second ship is referred to as the (...) (20 years ago, 26-Mar-04, to lugnet.space, FTX)

Re: Open the pod bay doors, HAL.

(...) It's beautiful! I have the Blue Danube Waltz drifting thru my mind right now just from looking at it. Love the pods, love the 'communication array', basically the entire model! It's fantastic. HAL, open the pod bay doors.. I can't do that, (...) (20 years ago, 26-Mar-04, to lugnet.space, FTX)

Photos (Re: Open the pod bay doors, HAL.)

Very nice Jason. Between that and Junkbot I can see you've been using your time very well :) I have one question.   Re: Open the pod bay doors, HAL.

(...) That looks incredible. We'll have to plan our next meeting for your place so we can all 'oo' and 'ah' over it. I've had the privilege of seeing this near completion, and it looked GREAT.   Re: Open the pod bay doors, HAL.

Hi Jason Fantastic - that's all there is to say really! I am very impressed. (...) As as lover of all things Arthur C Clarke (I own 2001 on VHS and I have read all 4 books in the series and a bunch more Clarke besides), I gotta say that this is way cool. And as a lover of lego, I gotta say that this is way cool :) (20 years ago, 28-Mar-04, to lugnet.space)

Re: Open the pod bay doors, HAL.

Well done, Jason. It's great to see the old 'dog-bone' in LEGO. It's been a very very long time since I've seen the movie, but one glimpse brought a rush of recognition and nostalgia. I especially like the way you've integrated the saucer pieces (...) (20 years ago, 28-Mar-04, to lugnet.space, FTX)

Re: Open the pod bay doors, HAL.

Re: Open the pod bay doors, HAL.

(...) Jason, From the preview you gave a while back with the pod, I had high hopes for this MOC - and you shattered them.   Re: Open the pod bay doors, HAL.

Truly excellent work!!! "2001: A Space Odyssey" is one of my favorite all time movies--sci-fi or otherwise--so I know I'm probably a bit biased. But still, as Lego MOC's go I have to say that this is one of the best scale movie models that I've ever (...) (20 years ago, 28-Mar-04, to lugnet.space, FTX)

Re: Open the pod bay doors, HAL.

(...) Wow! That's aMAZing. Let me add to the chorus of accolades, very nice model. My questions are these: I'm not clear on how the centrifuge is arranged (I never figured it out in the movie either...), is it in the vertical plane while the pod (...)   Re: Open the pod bay doors, HAL.

Like others have said, seeing this model immediately brang back memories of watching 2001: A Space Odyssey and hearing the accompanying music...   Re: Open the pod bay doors, HAL.

(...) Yes, I did come across that site in my research. They also have a good number of pictures of cool real life models of the various 2001/2010 craft in the (URL) Arts - Models> section. Thanks for the response! J (20 years ago, 28-Mar-04, to lugnet.space, FTX)

Re: Open the pod bay doors, HAL.

(...) Thanks! (...) That's a great idea. I was toying with the idea of building a custom display case for it but getting an existing one would be much easier.   Re: Open the pod bay doors, HAL.

(...) Thanks! (...) Yup, that's right. Obviously my interpretation of the interior exercises a lot of artistic liberties but I think the general arrangement is correct.   Re: Open the pod bay doors, HAL.

(...) I most certainly did. It would fit nicely with my planned next MOC - I am working on the designs for the LaGrange I space station from the very same movie. Yours, Christian Treczoks (20 years ago, 29-Mar-04, to lugnet.space)

Re: Open the pod bay doors, HAL.

(...) oh my goodness, Jason, this is amazing, I'm sure you've heard it before, but I had to mention it. I almost think the sin of cutting a box wrench is worth it in this case. Thanks, George (20 years ago, 29-Mar-04, to lugnet.space, FTX)

Re: Open the pod bay doors, HAL.
