New MOCs: 2 Large Cranes —Thomas Avery
Once in a long while I get the privilege of announcing a new MOC. Today, I'm announcing two! Presenting: (2 URLs) MSG 50 Containerised Lifting Device> -A 15 foot tall model of the real MSG 50 crane operated by Mammoet. (2 URLs) Tower Crane> -A 8.5 (...)         Re: New MOCs: 2 Large Cranes —Steven Lane
(...) Brilliant crane T.J! What a shame it crashed 15 minutes into the show, if it had been 15 minutes before the end, it wouldn't have been so bad. And thanks for the tip about the soda. I've used mineral water in the past so I have the advantage (...) (21 years ago, 1-Nov-03, to lugnet.technic, FTX)

Re: New MOCs: 2 Large Cranes —Thomas Avery
(...) Thanks! (...) Good idea :-) Regular water would have been fine too. I was just hasty and grabbed whatever I had available. Never guessed I would have ended up with a sticky mess. (...) Well, it was certainly a learning experience and adds to (...) (21 years ago, 1-Nov-03, to lugnet.technic, FTX)

Re: New MOCs: 2 Large Cranes —Steven Lane
(...) I tried regular water but it refused to hold its shape and reverted to it's normal puddle configuration. When I upgraded to the mineral variety I found the handy 1.5L bottles it comes in conviently held it in one place long enough for it to (...) (21 years ago, 2-Nov-03, to lugnet.technic, FTX)

Re: New MOCs: 2 Large Cranes —Tim David
both of these are really good models, they are not really my area of interest/expertise (do I have that?!) but I read through the pages slowly, taking everything in and looking at every image rather than skimming. You must have felt like crying when (...) (21 years ago, 1-Nov-03, to lugnet.technic, FTX)

Re: New MOCs: 2 Large Cranes —Ross Crawford
(...) Tim, accidents such as that often happen in real life, in most cases due to operator error or unpredictable weather. You can see some examples here (URL) (21 years ago, 1-Nov-03, to lugnet.technic, FTX)

Re: New MOCs: 2 Large Cranes —Thomas Avery
(...) Steve was really cool about it. He helped me clean up, and then I helped him rebuild his crane. At least we got it up for the rest of the show. (...) Nope, I've not found any broken elements. A few were scratched and gouged, but none broke! (...) (21 years ago, 1-Nov-03, to lugnet.technic, FTX)

Re: New MOCs: 2 Large Cranes —Dennis Bosman
(...) Again, two excellent creations from TJ's hands! The MSG50 is briljant! Only a big shame it crashed. (...) Why don't you build a polar bear for instance? There are lots of other thing to build ;-) Dennis p.s. I know it, I also have a certain (...) (21 years ago, 1-Nov-03, to lugnet.technic, FTX)

Re: New MOCs: 2 Large Cranes —Thomas Avery
(...) Thanks for you comments! (...) Hmm... a life-sized model with fully automated functions and R/C. I could use a 12v car battery... Dang! I can't ever think small :-) (...) Will do! Thanks, TJ (21 years ago, 1-Nov-03, to lugnet.technic, FTX)

Re: New MOCs: 2 Large Cranes —Ross Crawford
(...) A very nice crane, pity about the crash. Do you know what exactly failed? (...) This is really nice. I've been toying with the idea of building a tower crane like the (URL) K10000> with the turntable at the bottom of the tower, but the problem (...)          Re: New MOCs: 2 Large Cranes —Thomas Avery
(...) Thanks. There was no part that failed. It was due to "operator error". I forgot to do something fairly critical. It's all written up on the webpage. (...) Sure! Go ahead. That's why I showed all the fine details. Yes, the K10000 would be quite (...) (21 years ago, 1-Nov-03, to lugnet.technic, FTX)

Re: New MOCs: 2 Large Cranes —Max Maxwell
(...) Simply amazing! The size of these cranes, and the attention to detail is amazing! The sheer size of both cranes is simply incomprehensible to my mind. They make me ask myself, are these really made out of Lego bricks? (...) Please, don't try (...) (21 years ago, 2-Nov-03, to lugnet.technic, FTX)

Re: New MOCs: 2 Large Cranes —Thomas Avery
(...) That's the effect every builder hopes to achieve. Thanks for your comments :-) (...) Nah, it's not too hard! You just need a whole giant lot of Technic beams :-) Both cranes were built with a simple, repeating truss pattern. Apply a few (...) (21 years ago, 4-Nov-03, to lugnet.technic, FTX)

Re: New MOCs: 2 Large Cranes —Tim Rueger
(...) ... Great work, as usual. I'd missed the MSG 50 in Dallas, so it's great to see photos of it before its untimely demise. (...) Then this probably won't help: (URL) -Tim (21 years ago, 2-Nov-03, to lugnet.technic, FTX)

Re: New MOCs: 2 Large Cranes —Thomas Avery
(...) Thanks! You arrived about 30 minutes too late. You didn't miss it by much! I'm just glad Jake took those photos. (...) That's just sick. I love it. -TJ (21 years ago, 4-Nov-03, to lugnet.technic, FTX)

Re: New MOCs: 2 Large Cranes —Tobbe Arnesson
(...) It was -and still is- an impressive achievment in LEGO, TJ! To bad you failed to operate it properly, an check list for your next project might be in order .) Unbelivable no parts were broken after that incident, LEGO is tough! How big radius (...) (21 years ago, 2-Nov-03, to lugnet.technic)

Re: New MOCs: 2 Large Cranes —Thomas Avery
(...) Definitely. I think an operator's manual and a training course would have helped too! (...) No kidding. I was amazed too. LEGO is quite durable. I think parts flew out 20-30 feet or more. There are probably some still out there! (...) Hmm.. (...) (21 years ago, 4-Nov-03, to lugnet.technic)

Re: New MOCs: 2 Large Cranes —Beat Felber
Sorry TJ for not reacting earlier on your newest post. Although I already mentioned it in my mails, I must again say that I am impressed by your latest creations. The color scheme gives these two cranes a very realistic look although there are many (...) (21 years ago, 4-Nov-03, to lugnet.technic, FTX)

Re: New MOCs: 2 Large Cranes —Thomas Avery
(...) Thanks! I've stocked up considerably on red and white, so I'm kinda stuck in that color scheme :-) Fortunately it works well for large cranes. (...) Yes, crashes happen, even to the best of us. And the bigger you build, the more spectacular (...) (21 years ago, 5-Nov-03, to lugnet.technic, FTX)

Re: New MOCs: 2 Large Cranes —James Loewen
(...) These are really impressive. The thing that impresses me the most is getting something as large as these cranes to support their own weight, let alone lift anything, being as large as they are. I wonder how many parts the MSG 50 uses :) (...) (21 years ago, 5-Nov-03, to lugnet.technic, FTX)

Re: New MOCs: 2 Large Cranes —Thomas Avery
(...) Thanks! It is sometimes surprizing what these parts are capable of. But with good building techniques and proper designs, tall cranes (and many other large structures) are possible. Of course they do have their limits, and that must be (...) (21 years ago, 5-Nov-03, to lugnet.technic, FTX)
