Although I already mentioned it in my mails, I must again say that I am impressed by your latest creations.

The color scheme gives these two cranes a very realistic look although there are many other colors as well on real cranes. But red and white makes them look impressive and it also means that they are a danger in a certain way.

Thanks! I’ve stocked up considerably on red and white, so I’m kinda stuck in that color scheme :-) Fortunately it works well for large cranes.

That your MSG 50 was dangerous, you were able to prove ;-) Don’t take the crash too serious, it happens to all of us. When building the Mountaineer, the finished boom crashed down due to a gust of wind. At that point I had to decide wheter to continue the project or to abandon it. Fortunately I had the time to rebuild that boom.

At least that crash showed again, that the bricks we love so much are much stronger than one could think. You mention no broken part - on the Mountaineer disaster, only two small plates were broken because the boom fell right into the door frame.

Yes, crashes happen, even to the best of us. And the bigger you build, the more spectacular the crash :-)

And finally, if the MSG 50 had not crashed, you never would have built the tower crane which is an interesting model as well. I could imagine that without that compact turntable assembly, it would not have been possible to slew such a boom and counterweight boom combination.

Ah, true!

The turntable was the key to the model. It took a full weekend to design and build, but made the model operate very well. I was still surpized at how much bending moment the turntable could take. I’m sure the Technic turntable inside would have popped apart if not for the counter rollers. They worked great.

However, as Dennis pointed out, the center of the turntable is filled up, and passing wires through is impossible with this design. Although not necessary for this model, if used again in a different application, it might be problematic.

Oh well, I could only do so much in one weekend ;-) It’s a rough draft for a smaller turntable design (under 16 studs square) and perhaps someone can improve on it.

We could form a group of self-helps. I am a crane addict as well :-) My newest creation will be a crane too when finished somewhen in the future.

Cool. Looking forward to that...

best, TJ
