These things always seem to blow up when someone exercises "vigilante
justice" (I haven't followed through 100% of this particular instance to
say that this one is a case of "vigilante justice" but I'm speaking from
a general viewpoint). What I think would be most helpfull is a clear
statement to all (including perhaps a note in the T&C) that "vigilante
justice" is not really appreciated (however, _polite_ requests to
respect on-topicness should not be considered "vigilante justice", but
they should also only be used when an off-topic thread is starting to
grow out of proportion, which is different from responding to the
off-topic thread yourself and re-directing follow-ups).
I hav noticed that the responses to buy-sell-trade posts outside of
.buy-sell-trade have changed to a more polite "you will probably have
better luck in .buy-sell-trade". This is a good trend.
Let's all agree to try and keep the temperature down, and this means
thinking whether we really need to respond to someone's complaint or off
base statement before doing so in a negative way, no matter how much
they might deserve to be called on it.
