But who can leave?

Jon, over the years, several people online (here and in RTL) _have_ actually
exited the hobby.  Some permanently, some for a few months or a few years.
Offhand, in the past three years, I remember several people who at one time
or another declared some form of very serious exit.  (Eileen Keeney, Minx
Kelly, Lou Zucaro, Allan Bedford, Jeremy Sproat, Jacob McKee.)  Countless
others have checked out less emphatically.  These were all people who many
people knew and had interacted with and were missed.  Some have returned,
some haven't.  Others have indicated teetering and may just check out
someday.

So since this type of thing does happen, and since it's a serious thing when
it does, I hope everyone can understand how many people could take it very
seriously when anyone declares their exit, especially in the .announce group
and not on April Fools Day.

This isn't to imply that everyone here should somehow magically know the
community's history of painful exits, just that it is a sensitive subject.
It's not a happy-joy or ha-ha thing when someone leaves.  (If it is, try to
imagine it from the point of view of the virtual death of a peer.)

Pulling off a joke is delicate thing, and there's always an associate risk.
Please don't get upset or look down upon at anyone who was hurt, confused,
or insulted by Mark's post without considering all of the above.

(...) get (...) Not really... Perhaps it was true at the time, but he didn't really leave. His collection is not the same as it was, but in one sense it became more mature, more realistic. And since he could never truly leave, maybe that's true for (...) (23 years ago, 26-Mar-01, to lugnet.admin.general)
