It seems to me that a new group for hot availability items (good price,
unusual offering, etc) is not really necessary. It seems to me that that is
the purpose of shopping. Of course a cross post to buy-sell-trade that a
particular person is willing to purchase and ship (for whatever compensation
they negotiate with the final buyer) is also reasonable.

A post highlighting something cool you found on the used market, which is
purely a bragging rights post, might justify a new group, but is probably ok
for lugnet.general or the theme groups. If you are telling people about what
you just found, and are offering it for sale/trade, then your post belongs
in lugnet.market.buy-sell-trade (or .auction if you are going to auction it
off).

An FOTW type thing found at a retail outlet could fall either way. If you
didn't buy them all up, or you have reason to believe that other stores
might have the item, the post probably belongs in lugnet.market.shopping.

I think the lugnet.market.services group is still a good idea.

A lugnet.market.shopping.announce may be a good idea (if this is created, it
would be neat for it to just automatically put follow-ups to
lugnet.market.shopping). The idea here is that announcements of sales etc.
are interesting to a wider audience than a discussion of shopping
techniques.

Things like DYA's announcements belong wherever we want people to announce
K-Mart sales and the like, though the little updates "I only have 3 left,
the item has been removed from the web site, e-mail me if you want to buy"
may belong in buy-sell-trade. Nugator and Baylit are borderline cases,
though both tend to have a large enough stock of bits, and they don't tend
to list specific things that are available, so I would be inclined to think
that announcements that they exist, and b.t.w. just got a ton of pirate
parts, are ok for shopping.

In my opinion there are several classes of announcements of sales

- item is being auctioned
- item is for sale, very limited quantity available
- item is for sale by something resembling a retail store (even if online),
quantity is such that others can expect to contact the store and purchase
the item

Now on a totally different track, how about a new set of groups,
lugnet.new.2000, lugnet.new.2001, etc where all the discussion of the new
sets would occur? This would tend to consolidate such discussion, and make
lugnet.general easier to follow for those who don't want to rush out and buy
the latest set (or are in Oz and won't see them for months), who just want
to follow other discussions. These groups would also make it easy for
someone joining Lugnet say in July, to find the discussion of that years
sets.

(...) Well, yah, hmm, that's a good point. Who's gonna flog a crummy deal in .shopping? OTOH, .shopping was also set up for discussing any old retail experience -- i.e, anything from FOTW's to GOOB's to ragging on FAOS's alleged high pricing or (...) (...) Well, groups do stick around, so the 'new' designator wouldn't be fitting after a certain point. I was thinking if ever there were groups for product line years, they oughtta parallel the DB, since this'll be set up for browsing by year anyway (...) (...) Hmm, the rationale being what? (Not disagreeing, just unclear on the motivation behind it.) To increase (encourage) more FOTW posts? To make FOTW's easier to find? To make FOTW's come and find you (by subscribing to the group via e-mail?) I'm (...) (24 years ago, 21-Feb-00, to lugnet.admin.general)
