Re: why is no-one saying anything about my parts?

Usually I only stop by this group every once in awhile, but I've noticed this was building. (...) You were designing ldraw parts without actual pieces present for reference? I wouldn't put any confidence in a system like that. I sure am glad others (...) (25 years ago, 30-Jul-99, to lugnet.cad.dev)

  Re: New SW contest proposal

(...) Perhaps it would be better to just send Lego of equal value to overseas winners anyway as Lego seems to be cheaper in the US than anywhere else in the world (at least according to the Star Wars prices that were up a few months ago) Just a (...) I'm interested in General boxes #1 & #2, and Junk Box #1. Eric DeGiuli P.S. I'm in Niagara Falls, Ontario, (a border town) so I can hop over the border to save shipping money.   RE: RIS version 1.5 coming this fall

(...) Well, let me put in my nickle's worth as a grizzled veteran of embedded systems. I'm 37 years old and have hacked the following... 1. A Commodore PET (my first FORTH) at age 20 or so 2. An HP48 calculator. The PPC ROM and synthetic programming (...) (25 years ago, 30-Jul-99, to lugnet.robotics)

  Re: Lego mentioned on Slashdot

(...) Well, after reading the part that DID inspire the post (the few geeks debating the trademark) I decided to go back and grab the url for the entire thread, thinking some people might not be familiar with Slashdot and not be able to find the (...) (25 years ago, 30-Jul-99, to lugnet.general)

Re: RIS version 1.5 coming this fall

(...) Certainly they chose to allow firmware downloads to allow for future upgrades. For a new RCX, if they really wanted to prevent us from writing new firmware, the best solution, and one we could not defeat without extraordinary means, would be (...)   Re: RIS version 1.5 coming this fall

(...) Sorry, I was (accidentally) spreading FUD. Didn't occur to me that taking the batteries out would reset it. I assumed that "firmware" really meant firmware. --Todd (25 years ago, 30-Jul-99, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: RIS version 1.5 coming this fall

(...) Seriously? OK, whew! Then I *was* just being paranoid. I'll cross my fingers then and hope that 1.5 also has this property. (...) Amazing. Excellent. All is well with 1.0 then! (Whew!) --Todd (25 years ago, 30-Jul-99, to lugnet.robotics)

  Re: Why 5 to 6?

It's only a guess but perhaps they picked that sort of ratio to make sure that it would be easier for small kids to play with them - having a 1-1 ratio might be more confusing for kiddies who are just about getting old enough to work out which way (...)   z14 bevel gears (was Re: hinges and bevel gears, was Re: 60 degree problem

Okay, I'll bite -- how do you get 7/6 to be anywhere close to SQRT(3)? 7/6 is 1.167, and SQRT(3) is 1.732. Is there an additional 2:3 ratio hidden inside the "8880 transmission"? Also, I'm having a little trouble figuring out how the transmission (...) (25 years ago, 29-Jul-99, to lugnet.build)

RE: MN FIRST Lego League page

The MPEG section is pretty cool. A wide variety of solutions to the same challenge. Robots with touch sensors, light sensors, robots with no sensors at all. "Kenny" and "Michel Dowling" are impressive no-sensor versions - they both drive a nice, (...) (25 years ago, 29-Jul-99, to lugnet.robotics)

RE: RIS version 1.5 coming this fall

(...) I hope I'm not missing something obvious, but surely you just take the batteries out? That's always got rid of the firmware pretty effectively for me. Surely no software can physically alter that? iain -- iainbarker@bigfoot.com Anything is (...) (25 years ago, 29-Jul-99, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: RIS version 1.5 coming this fall

(...) That is true except for removing the firmware by removing the batteries. Since the only alterable storage is powered by the batteries, there can never be permanent changes to the brick that survive a hard power-off. (...) The ROM is in the CPU (...)   Why 5 to 6?

Why is the 5-to-6 ratio supposed to be such a great thing? I still think that a 5-to-5 or 6-to-6 ratio (better known as 1-to-1) would have been much better. It would, for example, make it much easier to build things at right angles to other things (...) (25 years ago, 29-Jul-99, to lugnet.general)

Re: RIS version 1.5 coming this fall

(...) OK, that's what I thought. But from that, doesn't it follow that this statment would be true?-- It is possible to write replacement firmware which, when downloaded and executed, still allows new application code but prevents the downloading of (...)
