Hey, does anybody out there even care about the rock raiders?  I mean the last
post in this forum was three weeks ago, and he was looking for hats to make
wild west items.  I hope that all of the R&D that went into this whole Rock
Raider system of Books games and toys was worth it, because TLG has killed off
systems (Pirate, Wild West, Etc..) that were way more popular than this.  Go
to your local toy retailer, and look what you find.... Lots of Rock Raiders
sitting on the shelves.  Maybe the kids like them, but they aren't buying
them.  Jon

True.  Every set has too many specialty pieces, and they can't be easily
integrated into other themes.  Plus, the price:piece ratio is too expensive.
I'd buy a few of the sets, IF they went on extreme clearance.  Of course, that
would only be for a very select few pieces, namely the brown chains, two-piece
rocks, some of the tools,  the gray bricks, "brickonium", and rock monsters.
All of these would be well integrated into the castle theme.  A mountain
dwelling rock monster clan...there's possibilities there, methinks.

The cost per piece in the Rock Raiders sets is higher than for any other theme,
and the number of juniorized parts and SPUDs is in general quite high.  I
suspect that parents balk at the former, and both AFOL and discerning JrFOL (who
would constitute the majority of kids buying their own Lego) balk at the latter.

Personally, I balk at both.

Actually, (Me being a kid myself) I only bought some of the rock raiders sets
for one reason- the minifigs. They have the coolest new heads, and the torsos
make good special-ops 'figs. My little brother , on the other hand, bought the
full set.. He did comment on Qoute "These sets have too many huge usless ugly
peices!" but other than that, he had a great time. I feel its just the theme
that attracts younger kids to them, but it doesnt do anything for me

I agree the minifigs are not bad at all. I got the $3 set to get Jet (the
female) and if I see the m-f pack on sale I'll be happy to get it. The big
sets, tho', seem like a waste of my money (which is limited, and I'd rather
see it going on castle stuff).

Yep.  Thank god they released a mini-fig pack:)  Buy the RR video game and
your sure to want a few of the sets.  I actually like most of them, especially
the base, which is just perfect for buying on clearance.  One thing I was
dissapointed about, when I purchased the game I expected the commander guy to
be the free set inside, and after playing the game I *really* wished it.  But
now you can buy him separate for 4 bucks...I don't know if I should sing or
cry:)  Anyway, rock raiders certainly has potential to be really cool, a bunch
of underground mechs with shiny drills could be awsome:)  Too bad what we were
offered stinks...the next Underground theme should be interesting.
Underground is very much like Aquazone too me, another theme I think doesn't
get its deserved recognition.

Hello,

I picked up the minifig pack. They are great for space recruits. The small
sets offer more than the big, cause the big sets are ripoffs. Rock raiders
have awesome potential. Rock raiders are like a good joke with a bad delivery.
Futuristic miners are a great idea, but Lego could've done better. Rock
raiders could have had evil counterparts instead of rock monsters. Aquazone
isn't that bad. All Lego themes deserve recognition.Castle, town, pirate,
space, wild west, aquazone, time cruisers, and launch command could've still
been going if Lego let them. Same goes for adventurers, ninja, arctic, and of
course, rock raiders. By the way where can you get the rock raider commander?
I use Docs, the one w/ the gray uniform, as my leader.

Launch Command is sort of still going: I consider Space Port to be sort of a
Launch Command II.

I hate how Lego is giving up on all the classic themes, though.  I didn't miss
Pirates much (the eyepatched stubbled heads get annoying when you're searching
through your 35 unused heads to find a suitable one for a starship commander),
but Castle was a major loss, and I don't see how Lego could possibly have
thought cancelling Space was a good idea... maybe they couldn't think up a new
theme?  (If anyone from Lego reads this, I demand Ice Planet II and Spyrius II
and I hereby relinquish all intellectual and/or other rights to the ideas.)

Er...Knight's Kingdom isn't Castle?

OK, it's not as good as some of the earlier sets, but neither is Space Port
as compared to Launch Command...

Yeah:)  Thus far I have accumulated three of the set, as well as more than a
few hover scouts and rapid riders.  It's a shame the big sets arn't as cool as
the little ones. I do think it was very noble of them to pack a crystal in
with all the small sets.  The Commander can be purchased separately, and is
set number 3347.  It's a S@H exlusive, and he belongs to a line of recently
introduced fig packs (including star wars).  I've heard that S@H has a handful
of the new packs in stock, but I don't know which ones, so I can't say they
have him for sure.

Just tonight I swallowed hard (twice)and purchased the Loader Dozer, 89 pieces
for 20 bucks is like a pack of gum for $5, but I had to have a rock monster
already.  I'm not particularly fond of the model, it looks to stubby, but it's
ok.  I got the Granite Grinder at the same time, I'd like it a lot better if
it'd stop looking like a dog's head.  Come on, the rock monster ain't that
bad.  They should have offered a better way to get him.  My fav RR vehicle is
the Chrome Crusher, I know it's way juniorized but it's still a cool set.  I
love the names of these sets, "Chrome Crusher" and "Granite Grinder" are right
up there with "Hydro Reef Wrecker".

The RR fig pack is the type of thing I'd like to see more often from lego.

I care very much about the Rock Raiders. I'm in the process of building them a
mega-base and adding new members to the team. Anyone who knows me knows there
are two things I desire: M-tron and Rock Raiders (and mechs, but that's not a
Lego theme). If you don't like your Rock Raiders, I'll be happy to trade much of
it away (especially the teal and chrome pieces).

What I'm waiting for is the follow-up to Rock Raiders. What good is any theme
without a 'next year's collection'? This was one of the failings of Wild West.
If you don't add to a theme, it will die. On that note: why arctic? Really, what
is the point of arctic other than to revive a half thought out rendition of Ice
Planet 2002. Gimme more Raiders!!!

Hey, does anybody out there even care about the rock raiders?

I love the inspiration behind the theme, though not the Chrome Crusher's
"baseplate".  I feel that the theme would have been better if they had used
technic parts more in all sets, but as it stands I like it a lot.  Most of the
parts actually do work well in my space and castle creations, but I really
cannot wait for a trasparent window canopy to attach to the large cockpit
section of Chrome Crusher!
True the theme has flaws, but so does every one of LEGO's current themes.
Bring back the 1985-1995 models and whoever at LEGO was responsible for them
and I'd wager that Rock Raiders would "rock", pardon my pun...
Best wishes,
Aaron (maniac@vol.com)

Leave it to me to re-open multiple threads from 2 months ago, but here I go
again...

Aaron,
I can respect your dislike for the 'Chrome Crusher's Baseplate', but I wanted to
point out that even evil pieces can serve a 'good' purpose. Obviously, the tough
part was taking this piece out of the context that TLG made it for: a chasis.
Check out the following pages for my variant:
http://www.jps.net/hardcore/lego/ufo/al902.html
http://www.jps.net/hardcore/lego/ufo/al90210.html
http://www.jps.net/hardcore/lego/ufo/al90213.html

As you can see, the baseplate is the entire basis of the walker. Without it, it
wouldn't be able to support it's own weight considering it's made mostly out of
plates (1x and 2x). Most folks who know RR are shocked when I turn it over
because they also consider it a useless piece. And, no....that's not my only
idea for that piece...

I must say that I think I have yet to see a large piece which someone hasn't
managed to make very good use of. As you point out, for certain
constructions, using a large piece like this makes for a much sturdier
model, and with a little effort, the lines of the piece can be sufficiently
concealed, or made to meld into a nice model. I just saw someone who used
the complex slopes from the Star Wars droid fighter for the roof of a
trolley (other good uses have been roofs for small train or bus stations and
awnings on buildings).

I kind of agree with you.  I wish they would replace this series with actual
mechs.  I also keep hoping to see an ancient greece topic, something based
Jason and the Argonauts ot Clash of the Titans themes.  Something instead of
just plain mini-figs have creatures and lots of them (skels, medusa, golems,
cereberus, merfolk, gargoyles, etc.).  On the same note, new mini-figs packs
of them would be really nice (water-different sharks, dolphin, octopuss,
mantaray; land animals; skels; even the rock monster).  It's so hard to get
those pieces and would be great to see it.

I agree that Rock Raiders sucks as a theme the way Lego has done it.  I do
however think that the mini-fig pack is the best one since the early 90s as all
figs can be used as generic "grunts" as I wrote here:

http://www.lugnet.com/underground/?n=137

(note that I have changed this to "I plan on getting at least 200 of these.")
