Tanbrickhaven - The refit of the Advantage was completed today after returning
from artillery duty during the recent Battle of Grand Baseplate. While, the
blue-banner forces were defeated, all but one of the Imperial Soldiers attacking
from the North (Deployed by ISS Adventure) were killed when trapped between
enemy fortifications and the enemy's flagship, the Mint, also recently completed
after the generous peace treaty. While ISS Advantage was the only Imperial
Soldier ship not to deploy some of its crew to fight in the battle, it played a
vital role in securing victory when the enemy forces attempted to escape with
their president on their flagship.

Advantage's refit replaced the aft structures, removing the stained-glass and
adding chrome gold and a mizzenmast, carrying a lateen sail for increased
manueverability. Cannons were thoughtfully repositioned to preserve the
360-degree targeting radius of the warship, and a full-size wheel was placed on
the quarterdeck (although another auxiliary wheel is located below the deck in
case the raised one should be damaged). While the structure changed, the
interior did not. It still retains its two-level bridge with a drink bar in the
back.

In addition to the mizzenmast, the shipyard's respected engineers also installed
a crow's nest and expanded mast platforms (see bottom of this posts). These new
mast platforms can fit more than twice as many sailors and measure 10 by 10
studs. The chrome gold aboard consists of 14 1x2 tiles, 2 1x2 modified tiles
with ball, and 2 1x1 round plates. Advantage was the first Imperial Soldier ship
in the area to use chrome gold, and with the vast wealth the soldiers have
acquired through their ties to the shipbuilding and merchant industries, it
seems like the start of a trend. The Mint, another Class 7 ship mentioned
earlier, is close behind, decorated with chrome silver.

*Grumbles and curses* I misspelled the name in the title.

Anyway, check out this little class 2 also:

Wow, so much more posting in .pirates than usual... can't comment on all the
models but nice ships all round!

Thinks we should start a 'ship-building techniques' thread, to get more ideas so
I can get a ship back on the sidebar ;)

Very nice ships. I wish I had ships that big.

You can, they're just more expensive. I bought some of mine over Bricklink and
Ebay as 6285 and 6286 sets. Others, I built from scratch. A word of warning:
Don't overbuy on the hull pieces if you're making ships from scratch, becuase
you'll find yourself with too many of them and not enough pieces to finish them!
I had to go back and order hundreds of pieces for some of my ships.

Small ships are nice, too, and can be just as beautiful and cool, plus they're
less expensive and easier (well maybe not...I should say less cosuming). And of
course they require less minifigs to crew (figs themselves can be expensive,
especially with all the weapons. Revolvers were cheaper and easier to find than
flintlocks, which is one of the reasons I switched my Imperials over to the
western-type guns).

But, if you really wish that size ship, you can get it for as low as $118 plus
shipping on BL.
http://www.bricklink.com/search.asp?q=6285+Black&searchSort=P&sz=100&sellerUsername=&t=&c=&u=&i=&uR=&invNew=&itemType=&invType=
and here's one on eBay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=19011&item=3192356790&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW
There's almost always some around. Search ebay for "Lego 6285" or "Lego 10040."

I find that eBayers tend to ship slightly faster (one doesn't always have to
wait for an invoice) but are more...diverse quality-wise (I've never gotten
smokey Lego from a Bricklinker).

If they're too expensive, consider a mid-size ship like the 6289/6290 RBR (It's
a fixer-upper!), the
6274 Carribean Clipper, or an Armada (or Imperial) Flagship. I'm not sure what
you've got so far (besides the Penguin ^_^)

And hey, I don't think either I or any of the other guys here would mind letting
you toy with one of our ships at a convention if you wanted to check them out
firsthand. If you ever end up in a Pirate Game that I'm running, you'll get your
Class 7 ^_^

Cheers!

Well, YOU suggested it :P

I'd love to discuss shipbuilding techniques. I'm always looking to improve.

I just recently discovered the crow's nest by looking at a photo of one from
below. (That's why I included such a photo in the post at the top of this
thread).

There's lots of things we can discuss. I think most of them are  modifications.

Let's see:

Expanded Mast Platforms and crow's nests
Adding forward (and rear) chaser cannons on turntables
Custom sails (definately cool)
Building and storing lifeboats
Studs-up yard design
Figureheads
Internal compartmentalization
The recurring problem of "How to make the interior accessible"
Starting a ship
making cool-looking aft sections
Extending masts and placement of sails (I want to see topgallants, royals, and
skysails!)

And, of course, how to build a good-looking two-decker. It's a challenge.

Too late, I've already got more hull pieces than I currently need. =)

Right now I'm just working on class 4 and small ships. Once I get enough built,
I will slowly work on larger ships. I had a RBR at one point, but my son razed
it. That's the largest ship I've ever had, but I have hull enough to build
larger ships if needed.

But, if you really wish that size ship, you can get it for as low as $118 plus
shipping on BL.

The lowest I've seen a BSB from a U.S. seller is ~134.00. I'm in the U.S. and
don't want to pay for oversea shipping.

If they're too expensive, consider a mid-size ship like the 6289/6290 RBR (It's

My local LUG is having a convention in October, so I'll check out some larger
ships at The Pirate Game there. I've been "into" LEGO for three years now, so
I'm fairly new to this stuff.

My focus is to build ships of class 4 or less, and to have enough of them to run
games with my friends and other selected individules. I have a wargaming/RPG
background, so I might attempt to run a game or two at a local hobby store, it
just depends on how brave I get. I'm unsure how non-AFOLs will react to it. Of
my freinds, one is almost a AFOL himself, and the others know I'm "into" this
stuff and are willing to play with no reservations.

As it stands right now, I have somewhere between 100-200 pirates with enough
weapons to equip them. Of boats, I have 4 class 1, 3x class 2, 2 class 3 and 1
class 4. Where I want to be is 8 class 1, 8 class 2, 4 class 3, and 4 class 4.

I find it cheaper to buy pirates and some parts on eBay. I have a certain fixed
price I'll pay. If it goes over, I move on to another auction.

Let's see:

Expanded Mast Platforms and crow's nests
I have made my own mast platform without using the Lego piece, by putting those
1x4 plates with the bar in the yard-holes (they are exactly 5 studs apart if you
use one on each side at the top of the bottom mast-piece).

No, that didn't make sense - look at pic instead
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=725543

Adding forward (and rear) chaser cannons on turntables
Custom sails (definately cool)
Building and storing lifeboats
Studs-up yard design
I'm pretty stumped on all of these.  I don't think I've ever managed to fit
boats to my ships without it looking stupid, and my biggest ship so far has only
had 4 cannons, so yeah.

Figureheads
Internal compartmentalization
The recurring problem of "How to make the interior accessible"
My biggest problem!  My latest idea -
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=725559
though this could get impractical with larger ships ;)

Starting a ship
Bah, this one is easy... just grab some hull pieces and let your hands wander.
It's finishing that's the tough one.

hello! these ships are coming along nicely! its funny, the Advantage actually
reminds me of the first real pirat ship i built! the stern section is almost
exactly the same! it's great to see some larger pirate ships being built. i am
not knocking small ships in *any way*, but i really prefer big ones! more guns
you know ;-) . i look forward to seeing more from you!

on another note, it's really great to see so many new .pirates posting! i was
really afraid for a while that this forum was going to die, because it seemed
that it did not attract any new members! GO REVITALIZATION OF .PIRATES! lets
heave to and lay seige to .castle!  hehehehe

hi, if i may add, i definitely would suggest buying through ebay rather than
bricklink. i was able to find many 6285's and 6274's for reasonable prices. the
trick is to just be patient. over the months i made purchases, i bought 5 BSB's
and 4 CC's for fair prices. if you are willing to look around, and sift through
the stuff you dont want, you can find ones that are not quite complete, but
almost, or partial, that go for FAR less than complete ones. it have a hard time
spending $120 on  BSB when i got all mine for $80 or less, with box to boot.
here's how i searched: "6285" and "6274" in the general search, "barracuda" and
"clipper" in the lego catagory, "pirate ship", "pirate", and "pirates" in the
lego catagory. i know it's alot of searches, but i have seen some ships not
listed very well go for atrotiously low prices. (BSB for $36.00!!!!!! cant
believe i didnt bid!) anyway, be patient, and be willing to search, and good
things will come to you. :-)

best regards,
steve

Yo ho ho, a pirate's life for me,
Michael

hi michael, i am extremely flattered that you hold my creation in such high
regard! you do me much honor. thank you. i was very happy with scimitar, but
believe it or not, i view all of my ships with an eye to improvement. as a
result, each one gets better than the last one! check out my other folders, and
you will see that mine started out very rudimentarily, and improved much over
time. i have one finished except for the last 2 sails that is a nice improvement
over the stern galleries of the Scimitar. i am just waiting for this semester to
be over to get pics, work and school are killing me right now, but i will have
pics up by the end of this week, i promise ;-) .

as far as the stern galleries go, the scimitar was a vast improvement over my
past ones, but my goal has been to build a gallery that is entirely sloped, not
just the lower part. my new design achieves this, and i didnt have to resort to
non traditional techniques (like basically jamming parts in the space to hold
the windos in, as they dont actually attach to the stern itself, like in this
pic: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=535371) which really
streamlines the design. anyway, i am very excited to share it with you guys, and
it will be soon!

anyway, if you guys start a techniques thread, it would be a very useful tool
for everyone here, myself included! one thing i dont do is build interiors, i
cant figure out how to make the ship structurally sound enough with out cross
bracing it throughout the hull. so, thats an area where i could use help.

best regards,
steve

This is sound advice. I recall a seller who consistently mispelled ‘pirate’ as ‘priate’... I picked up a few bits and pieces ;-)

If you’re building ships, you don’t need complete sets... if you’ve got the hull pieces, masts and ratlines, it doesn’t really matter about the treasure chest, parrot and treasure map that have gone missing.

There’s lots of things we can discuss. I think most of them are modifications.

Let’s see:

Expanded Mast Platforms and crow’s nests
Adding forward (and rear) chaser cannons on turntables
Custom sails (definately cool)
Building and storing lifeboats
Studs-up yard design
Figureheads

You can go larger than minifig - many ships had figureheads that were ‘larger than life’ (in many senses of that term). I find a minifig head, on a 2x1 tile (with one stud) on two headlight bricks, with 2 1x1 round plates as breasts works well... if you squint you can see the effect on the HMLS Demand.

   Internal compartmentalization
The recurring problem of “How to make the interior accessible”

Removable decks don’t work real well. The Misérable features removable gun deck panels, which you can see (sort of) http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/krafol/BricksMeet2003/MOCs/Pirates/blue4.jpghere. A section of hull and deck slide onto tiles on the main hull. The anchor points for the ratlines are fixed.

   Starting a ship
making cool-looking aft sections

Ask Stephen Rowe.

Extending masts and placement of sails (I want to see topgallants, royals,
and skysails!)

Use templates to make multiple copies of sails. Make new sails to the same proportions as the real Lego ones. Build your rig to fit standard sail sizes, not your sails to fit the rig (it makes rebuilds a lot easier, and you get used to standard proportions).

   And, of course, how to build a good-looking two-decker. It’s a challenge.

Ask Richard Parsons.

Cheers

Richie Dulin
